Lehrinhalte: In the age of globalization and interdependence, transnational governance (which I here take to include both public and private arrangements) is often regarded as a functional necessity. National governments are unable to tackle, let alone resolve, the ever-increasing number of pressing political problems that are transnational or even global in scope. At the same time, many commentators are lamenting the deficits in democratic quality, transparency, and accountability that the shift of political decision-making to forums beyond the nation-state and the increasing involvement of non-state actors have brought about. A legitimacy crisis of transnational governance is diagnosed that finds its expression in public criticism, street protests, and loss of popular support. This seminar is designed to map the current debate and to critically discuss some of the remedies for the legitimacy crisis that are currently being proposed, such as transnational parliamentarization, new avenues of citizen participation, or the advance of global administrative law. The language of instruction and debate in class is English.
