Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:

“Criticism starts - it has to start - with a real passion for reading.“
– Harold Bloom

This course introduces students to the history of English literature from Shakespeare to the present day. The texts read and discussed in this course will give an overview of the genres of prose, drama, and poetry.
The weekly lectures will introduce key methods of literary study and theory and help students develop a working literary vocabulary, as well as supplying tools for analysis and interpretation. In our analyses students will become acquainted with literary movements like Realism in prose and Romanticism in poetry, and they will be introduced to concepts like character and the tragic. We will look at the possibilities and modes of critical interpretation and reflect on the importance of close reading to academic analysis.
By studying important works by writers of different cultures and backgrounds, students also learn to reflect about social and cultural implications and functions of literature. By the end of the course, students will have gained experience in reading, analyzing, interpreting, and writing about literature.
The tutorials attached to this course will give students the chance to review ideas from the lectures, while allowing for further close readings of text and theory. The tutorials also give guidance and support to weekly readings and allow the students to engage in critical discussion with regard to the texts.

All students should purchase the course textbook: Andrew Bennett and Nicholas Royle. Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory. Fourth Edition (Longman 2009).

Students must purchase the following books:
William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (Penguin) ISBN-13: 978-0141012261.
