Course description
Why is the Vampire an omnipresent favourite in bookshelves and movie theatres? What lies behind the everlasting fascination for the ageless undead? And why has the highly sexualised literary figure of the vampire all of a sudden experienced a renaissance in teenage dreams? This seminar provides a historical survey of the vampire in literary and filmic productions. We will discuss the different topoi connected with this mysterious figure in texts from folklore to classic novels to modern bloodsucker tales such as Anne Rice’s "Vampire Chronicles" or Stephanie Meyer’s "Twilight" saga or the most recent TV series productions concerned with „True Blood“.
Participants are required to purchase:
Meyer, Stephanie (2007): Twilight. Volume I. London (Atom).
ISBN: 978-1904233657.
Rice, Anne (1989): The Queen of the Damned. New York (Ballantine Books).
ISBN: 978-0345351524.
Stoker, Bram (2011): Dracula. Oxford (University Press World’s Classics).
ISBN: 978-0199564095.
Additional material will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
Be prepared to read a lot!
