Wir werden allerdings auch die englische Ausgabe (Harvard UP 1996) in der Seminardiskussion intensiv nutzen (die relevanten Auszüge werden zu Semesterbeginn auf der Lehrplattform „Moodle“ bereitgestellt) – stellen Sie Sich also bitte auch auf die Lektüre von Texten ein, die in einigermaßen anspruchsvollem Englisch verfasst sind (oder: freuen Sie Sich auf eine Auseinandersetzung mit McDowells stilistisch überaus schönen, geistreichen Originaltexten). Dies betrifft auch die Sekundärliteratur, da sich die ernsthafte und ernstzunehmende McDowell-Rezeption und -Diskussion vornehmlich im englischsprachigen Raum abspielt. Die weiterführende Literatur werden wir im Seminar annoncieren und über die Lehrplattform „Moodle“ zur Verfügung stellen. Zur Einführung lohnt sich das Kapitel „John McDowell: Weltoffenheit und Erfahrung“ aus dem Band: Bertram, Georg W./Lauer, David/Liptow, Jasper/Seel, Martin: In der Welt der Sprache. Davidson u. a.) und sodann in der Abarbeitung an Kant und Hegel. Exkurse und Exkursionen in Detailfragen der Kant- und Hegeldeutung werden sich also ohne Zweifel ergeben. Aufgrund des Voraussetzungsreichtums und der für Studienanfänger wohl kaum zu durchdringenden Argumentation, halten wir eine Teilnahme am Seminar erst für Studierende ab dem 4. Fachsemester für sinnvoll. Das hat – neben einem womöglich nicht ganz unschuldigen hype, der sich über einen „neuen Klassiker freut – erfreulicherweise sachliche Gründe: Ohne doxographische Vorurteile nimmt McDowell liebgewonnene Themen und die aus ihnen gespeisten systematischen Probleme der angelsächsischen Diskussion auf, um sie im Licht einer kritischen Neuaneignung der sog. „kontinentalen Tradition“, vor allem: Kants, später dann Hegels, zu reformulieren. Am Leitfaden äußerst diffiziler erkenntnistheoretischer Probleme entwickelt er, inwiefern Anschauung nicht anders als je schon begrifflich geformt begriffen werden dürfe und zeigt dann, inwiefern daraus kein Begriffsidealismus folgt, sondern die „Natur“ als Grundlage von Erfahrung begrifflich als ein Moment menschlicher Tätigkeit verstanden werden müsse; entwickelt die Konsequenzen für handlungstheoretische Beschreibungen menschlicher Praxis (gegen anthropologische oder subjektivistische Verkürzungen) und schlägt schließlich vor, wie ein Begriff des Selbstbewußtseins ohne Handlung und Sprechen sinnlos wäre. Wir wollen diesen systematischen par force-Ritt im Seminar, auch im Licht der selbstverständlich sofort einsetzenden, mitunter erbitterten Kritik von Seiten anderer Philosophen nachvollziehen und diskutieren. McDowells Buch legt nahe, das im Rahmen eines Blockseminars zu tun: Wir werden uns in einer Vorbesprechung über die Seminarform verständigen (beabsichtigt ist ein „Workshop“-Charakter, der dann eben auch hohe Ansprüche an die Aktivität der Teilnehmer stellt) und die Themen für diskussionsleitende Referate aufteilen. Eine erste Blocksitzung im Januar soll dem Abgleich der bisherigen Lektüre, der Identifikation relevanter Diskussionspunkte und der gemeinsamen Orientierung der Referate dienen. Im eigentlichen, dreitätigen Blockseminar werden wir in intensiver Diskussion jeweils 2-3 der „Vorlesungen“ des Buches besprechen.
