Theories of public justification articulate the idea that, in order to be legitimate, the terms of political association must be shown to be reasonable from every individual’s point of view. Prominent theorists such as John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas, David Gauthier and Gerald Gaus have devoted considerable attention to the question of how the ideal of public justification is to be properly spelled out. In this course we will introduce a number of different approaches to public justification and discuss their comparative merits.
