Lehrinhalte: Studierende erhalten einen ersten Überblick über die Entwicklung und die wichtigsten Abschnitte der englischen (englischsprachigen) Literaturgeschichte sowie eine Einführung in den Konstruktcharakter der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung und deren theoretische Grundlagen. Sie erarbeiten Themen aus der englischen Literaturgeschichte.
Literatur: Lehrmaterialen und Übungen werden über das WWW zur Verfügung gestellt unter http://www.linglit.tu-darmstadt.de. Weitere, im Verlaufe des Kurses behandelte Literatur ist über die Bibliotheken der TU Darmstadt zu beziehen.

Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This seminar is meant to give a historical overview on the subgenre of nature poetry as well as a survey of some tools and methods of the analysis of poetry. After introductory sessions on features of poetic language our discussion in class will be primarily dedicated to the importance of poetic forms. Instead of paraphrasing and reconstructing content we will be concerned with the content of forms: How is meaning evoked in poetic language? Which linguistic, stylistic, rhetorical, typographic features contribute to a poem`s significance? How do these forms vary and develop historically? Which expertise does it take to be able to describe, analyse and interpret the forms of poems? A further focus of the seminar will be on nature as a historically contingent sujet. Here, the following questions will be addressed: since when do we speak of `nature poetry`? How can we define this subgenre? Why has nature been a particularly prominent topic of Western poetry? How have our conceptions of nature changed under the influence of changing social, scientific and philosophical perspectives?Texts: Participants are required to purchase a reader provided at the beginning of the semester. The reader will be available at Kopiethek, Magdalenenstraße. As introductory reading I recommend Christoph Bode, Einführung in die Lyrikanalyse; and Terry Eagleton, How to Read a Poem (Semesterapparat).Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, and 3 essays or a final paper.
