Lehrinhalte: With the Act of Union (1800), the "Irish question" became a major political issue in British politics throughout the 19th century. The course will chart debates within Britain about the treatment of the Irish and about Irish grievances. Among others, we`ll deal with British reactions to the famine and subsequent emigration, British attitudes to the religious polarity in Ireland (disestablishment question), discussions on Ireland among popular radicals, and the Home-Rule-attempts by Liberal governments under Prime Minister William E. Gladstone. If there are students who book the course as a "didactic seminar" (LG7 or LG8), we will additionally discuss the suitability of selected themes from 19th-century Irish history for bilingual history teaching in German schools. The course will be taught in English. First session: Thursday, 21 April 2011
