Jahrhundert, als die vormals bipolare Weltordnung aufgebrochen wurde und das Land sich in einem bislang noch nicht abgeschlossenen Prozess der Neueinordnung in das Koordinatensystem der Mächte befindet. Die USA haben das 20. Jahrhundert politisch, wirtschaftlich und kulturell nachhaltiger geprägt als jede andere Nation. Die Veranstaltung ist thematisch organisiert und befasst sich neben der klassischen politikgeschichtlichen Sichtweise gleichrangig mit der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklung des Landes. Angesprochen werden dabei unter anderem Themen wie die Durchsetzung der modernen Konsumkultur, spezielle Formen der amerikanischen Urbanisierung, die sich wandelnde gesellschaftliche Position von Frauen, die Bedeutung von Rasse und Ethnizität, automobile Mobilität und Infrastruktur oder der Einfluss der Religionen auf Politik und Gesellschaft. Ein besonderes Gewicht wird auf die Erläuterung der vielfältigen europäisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen und Konflikte gelegt. </p>
