Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
Increasingly, consequences of climate change are considered to be a human rights concern and the perspective of human rights is introduced into climate change politics. This dual relationship is, on the one hand, being progressively investigated considering the living conditions of particularly vulnerable populations affected by environmental damages and destruction, the situation of climate refugees, people’s lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation, massive crop losses and food insecurity or other major subsistence problems. On the other hand, policies generated to mitigate or adapt to climate change can also have a negative effect on the rights situation of a local target population. And the strategic framing of climate change as a human rights concern has allowed specific actors to re-frame the necessity of mitigation and adaptation actions. Thus, the link between climate change and human rights allows for a range of analytical perspectives for scholars from international relations (IR) and is, at the same time, highly relevant for policy-makers.
In this course, we will further explore relevant human rights aspects in the face of climate change. After two introductory sections, one devoted to understanding the basics of climate change and one dedicated to introducing human rights politics, we will learn more about normative and empirical considerations in the relationship between both.Particularly during our study trip to the 2013 COP in Warsaw, i.e. during the second part of this class (Winter Semester 2013714), students will have the opportunity to undertake own research and conduct interviewswith experts on climate change and human rights.
