This course is meant for masters students who are keen to better understand the interconnectedness of political and economic processes, actors, interests, and policies in contemporary world politics. We will learn about and look at illustrations of different political-economic models around the world, from liberal market economies via democratic welfare states to planned economies. We will learn how they interact and which trends characterize the process known as ‘globalization’. We will learn how political economic models and their interaction are politically highly contested and what current developments, such as the rise of the BRICs or the US/EU financial crisis, mean for the evolution of world politics & economics. To do all that we will learn to master the theoretical, conceptual and to some extent also the methodological toolkit of the field of study called International Political Economy (IPE). Its chief tenets are 1) that politics and economics are mutually determinant and should be studied together and 2) that they can no longer be usefully studied by conceiving of nation states as fully separate and independent entities. To master this field we have to look a bit beyond our disiplinary comfort zone, but are rewarded with a much keener understanding of how politics (and economics), at home and around the globe, really work.
The seminar will proceed by a mixture of short lectures, question & answer periods, and open discussion. Films and games/simulations as well as excursions may also be used where appropriate. Student presentations will be tightly integrated into the discussion to maximize their contribution to the common effort to learn. Active participation and contribution by all students is very important.
Literatur:
The course literature will be announced at the beginning of the semester. All required readings will be provided to the students.
Voraussetzungen:
The course is held in English. You should be able to read and understand English well and to speak it well enough to participate in discussion and give your presentation. The exam (oral or written) can be completed in English or German.

Requirements for Evaluation
• Regular and active participation in the seminar
• Completion of all required literature before the meeting in which it will be discussed
• Presentation (15 minutes per person or group) on a topic chosen together with the instructor; group presentations are possible
• Exam; you can choose a written or an oral exam in either English or German; details about the format will be provided in the seminar

Annette Freyberg-Inan vertritt den Lehrstuhl IB an der TU Darmstadt. Weiterhin ist sie langjähriges Mitglied des Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research der Universität von Amsterdam. Sie lehrt und forscht zu verschiedenen Themenbereichen der Internationalen Beziehungen und Internationalen Politischen Ökonomie, vergleichenden politischen Systemforschung, Politischen Theorie und Methodologie. Sie sitzt im Vorstand der International Studies Association und ihrer Theoriesektion, der Central and Eastern European International Studies Association sowie des World International Studies Committe und ist Mitherausgeberin des Journal of International Relations and Development.
