The course Chemical Safety and Sustainable Chemistry will not be offered in WiSe 22/23

Course Contents:
·         Sustainable chemistry and sustainable development in the context of international concepts and programmes
·         Challenges and market opportunities of proactively acting companies whose products contain industrially produced substances (i.e. manufacturers and traders of consumer goods or their components, such as textiles, furniture, toys etc.)
·         Basic principles of international chemicals legislation (substance act and product law act, international programmes and agreements on chemical safety)
·         Central regulations and requirements from the European chemicals regulation REACH; including

o          Appropriate control" of substance-related risks along the entire life cycle (basic obligations and procedures for substances subject to registration)
o          Risk-related information in the substance database of the European Chemicals Agency ECHA and safety data sheet
o          Determination of environmental impact thresholds on the basis of toxicological data

·         Introduction to trace analysis of toxic substances in the environment and in consumer products
·         Implementation in operational practice (risk assessment and safety management)

Qualification goals / learning outcomes
After attending the course the students have basic knowledge on how to assess and manage risks of chemicals. They know the concept of "sustainable chemistry" and are able to fundamentally describe its effects in an international context.

After successful completion of the course, the students are able to:
·         summarise the content of legal texts in the field of substance and product law, recognise the essential connections and apply them to simple cases.
·         describe the requirements that substance and product law formulates for the "appropriate control" of substance-related risks along the entire life cycle.
·         classify the effects of these requirements on operational and inter-operational material flow management and
·         weigh up different solutions to meet these requirements through management concepts, explain them in a factual and comprehensible manner, make decisions and justify them.
·         work together in a team and communicate and cooperate in an appropriate manner.
·         discuss the results of their work within the framework of scientific and legal ways of thinking.
·         present and defend the results of their work in an appropriate way.

Official Course Description:
Students learn the basic principles of the concept of "sustainable chemistry" and its impact on chemical safety - also in an international context.

The course participants gain insight into the complexity of chemical production and utilisation chains and learn to assess problematic manufacturing processes and develop solution approaches.

As part of the course achievement, the students research common substance databases and prepare a short report. In a practical group work in the laboratory, they get the opportunity to independently elaborate the evaluation of a consumer article.

Additional Information:
The course takes place in cooperation with Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
