Official Course Description:
This seminar aims to focus on the past and current state of the European Union (EU)-Turkey Relations and the impact of these relations on both the EU and Turkey. Therefore, it is crucially important to understand the background of Turkish-European relations (legal, economic, geostrategic, cultural and institutional aspects) before moving on to Turkey-EU relations of the present day. This seminar first outline the history of Turkey-Europe relations then will focus issues such as democracy, civil/military relations, Kurdish issue, economy, the customs union, refugee and asylum policy, immigration, public opinion and identity. In this course, students will also understand the changing nature of contemporary Turkish foreign policy under the AKP Governments. The course will also try to project the future of the relations between the EU and Turkey.
Each class will begin with a lecture/presentation and end up with a brainstorming exercise.
Learning Outcome
This class will include a combination of lecture and discussion. The format will be largely dependent on the material for a given day (some days will demand more explanation; other days will be more conducive to group analysis). Students should complete all of the readings and be ready to discuss them in the class.
Grading Policy
25% Participation (attendance and contributions to class discussions),
25% Presentations and discussions (Depends on number of participants of the Seminar, students might presents more than one presentations).
50% one final paper (12-14 pages, 6000-7500 Words)
In case of students who presents more than one, can write shorter final paper (6-7 pages, 2500-3000 Words) instead of 12-14 pages.
Presentation and Leading the Discussion
Each student will present a current topic orally in class each class period. The presentation should be no more than 30 minutes in length. Assignments of seminar topics for leading the discussion will be made at the first meeting. The discussion leaders are expected to have digested and analysed the reading at a level that makes it possible for them to assume responsibility for forming the discussion.
