Course Contents:
Day-for-night, often simply referred to as "American night", is a cinematic technique in which film scenes shot during the day or at dusk give the viewer the impression of a night shot.
This "technique" exemplifies the interplay of illusion and reality as an immanent tool and stylistic device of film. With this in mind, we are investigating the role that real architecture can play as a spatial transition into the dream world of cinema.
As part of the design, we want to explore the typology of venues and performance locations. What framework conditions, dimensions and positioning do they need in order to be able to immerse themselves in the world and atmosphere of film and visual art? What role can they play as a social meeting point and communicative element in the urban space and for a location?
The Cannes International Film Festival and the Studios de la Victorine in Nice are part of the Cote d'Azur's still important film industry and its productions. We want to design a new venue and meeting place for the community at this location. We will also explore the materials, structures and building typologies of the southern French coast. For this we will visit the Parc des Ateliers in Arles which has a focus on material research and the use of those from the region. The focus for the possible design location is on vacant buildings, ruins, gaps between buildings or unfinished shells.
