Course Contents:
Despite the worldwide spread of democracy during the last thirty years, one third of the world’s population still lives under diverse forms of autocratic rule. An already superficial overview of autocratic regimes shows a diverging and unequal picture. There are, on the one hand, apparently stable and rather successful regimes like China, Russia or Singapore. The current protest movements and revolutions in the Arab world, on the other hand, point to inherent instability of autocratic rule. This course in comparative politics is intended to examine stability and change of authoritarian regimes and concentrates on the subsequent issues:

  1. Identification, definition, and categorisation of authoritarian regimes.
  2. Legitimation of authoritarian rule.
  3. Requirements of authoritarian rule: political, economical, and cultural conditions of authoritarianism.
  4. Politics and polity in authoritarian regimes.
  5. Regime transformation: Conditions and modes of change; what comes after the termination of authoritarian rule?
