Course Contents:


  • General introduction in mobility and transportation (mobility and mobility planning, responsibilities of transport policy, regulatory policy, terminology of transportation, transport market)
  • Basics of transport business (transport companies and transportability of goods, forwarding and freight business in German Commercial Code, the German Road Haulage Law, ADSP, Logistics-Terms and insurances, driving time and rest periods, dangerous goods)
  • Modern logistics and transport services (modern forwarders and transport organisations, warehouses and distribution centres, packaging(non-returnable, dual-use) and transport equipment)
  • Relevance of information and communication technologies
  • Traceability (EU-Regulation 178/2002), rail traffic (development of rail traffic in Europe, types of freight transportation by rail, Deutsche Bahn AG, rail trafficbetween policy and market)
  • Air transportation, inland and ocean shipping (inland shipping, ocean shipping, air cargo, development of global freight traffic)
  • Business management in freight traffic and customs clearence (calculation of costs in transportation, customs clearence in EU/statistics, ATLAS)
  • Freight transportation in the future (change in sympathy and importance, costs of mobility and competitivness, gridlock? transportation and globalisation, GALILEO)

Official Course Description:
For introduction it will be dealt with existence and characteristics of transportation markets as well as business environment and regulatory framework for efficient freight transportation. This serves for understanding the specific characteristics of transport service providers of different modes of transport in freight transportation. Based on this the range of services of transportation companies and their continuous adaption on the sourcing, distribution and stocking requirements of industry and trade will be addressed. Cost and activity accounting as well as future directions in freight transportation complete the Institutional Principles of Transportation. The students should obtain an insight into the different characteristics of transport service providers in freight transportation and learn to understand decision making in these companies. Based on the customer needs and the regulatory framework the students should get to know decision processes and decision support systems of transport service providers in freight transportation.
