Course Contents:
This course has two main aims: 1.) We will learn how ‘globalization’ is defined, explained, and evaluated from different theoretical and political perspectives. 2.) We will learn about social movements and other actors which criticize ‘globalization as we know it’ from different angles, ranging from left-wing critiques of neoliberalism via ecological critiques to culturally or religiously reactions. This will require us to move between and integrate the fields of International Relations, International Political Economy, and Global Governance, but also to take lessons from such other relevant fields as Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies – we will use contributions from all these fields to develop a comprehensive view of the age we live in and the key conflicting views of its nature and development which together define contemporary world politics.
