The “End of History” debate of the early 90s coincided with the burgeoning of online commerce and internet-connectivity, marking the dawn of a new era in human affairs. Daily life continues to unfold, unabated. The ever-evolving contexts we inhabit and shape remain, permanently, in flux. Students of history seek regularities and law-governed patterns. Yet, in the course of researching the past, they uncover ruptures, discontinuities and serendipity. The radical singularity of lived events chaffs against a collective yearning for purposive cohesion. How can the “philosophy of history” engage this conceptual tension between the unique and the universal?
