Course Contents:
The lecture series takes Lessing's essay about the Laocoon Group as a boundary object in which multiple questions intersect - regarding the limits of poetry and painting, regarding the laws of form according reality takes shape, regarding the embodiment and expresson of pain. These questions go back to the time before Lessing and are still posed by the Laocoon Group today. Accordingly, the series of lectures will focus not primarily on Lessing's text but on Lessing's questions, their historical and philosophical significance.
The series will feature contributions from Darmstadt (Gernot Böhme, Mechthild Hetzel, Christoph Hubig, Alexandra Karentzos) as well as speakers from a variety of places and fields (Jens Badura, Cord-Friedrich Berghahn, Luca Giuliani, Steffi Hobuß, Christoph Jamme, Anne Pollok, Astrid Schwarz, Friedrich Vollhardt).
Literature:
The engagement with the Laocoon Group and central texts of the debate is strongly encouraged. Some relevant materials will be made available here.
Preconditions:
No advance knowledge is required but students are expected to actively participate in discussions, including a Thursday 9am tuturial session.
