Official Course Description:
Why do people obey the law? And under what conditions shouldthey do that? According to proponents of theories of political obligation, even if disobedience may be justifiedin some cases, there is a presumption in favour of obedience to the laws of the state in which we live. However, more recently, even within the liberal tradition many theorists are sceptical about political obligation. Issues discussed in this seminar include: reasons for obeying or disobeying the law; justifications of political obligation; conscientious objection; varieties of civil disobedience; the use of civil disobedience in social change and protest movements.
