Course Contents:
A typical day as a university student in Germany can be quite challenging for a foreign student. Confusion and misunderstandings can be caused by the different ways of dealing with time and space, norms, rules and regulations. These problems can be avoided in the first place once we become aware of the norms and rules both of our own culture and of German culture, in order to compare and contrast their values and beliefs, given that culture has a major influence on our thought processes and behaviour.
The goal of this course is to become familiar with the theoretical and practical foundations of intercultural competence. At the same time, we will focus on the German language as a way to improve students’ communicative competence in academic contexts. During the course we will use Critical Incidents as a way to address possible intercultural conflicts in a German university context.
Preconditions:
UNIcert I Certificate in German or a score of at least 40 on the placement test
