Course Contents:
Technology is a substantial driver for innovation and therefore it is a potential source of competitive advantage. In times of converging technologies, shorter technology life cycles, and increasing internationalization of research and development, Technology Management – the systematic early identification, development and utilization of technologies – becomes highly important.

Based on these requirements, some of the most important theories and tools of Technology Management are introduced and explained in this lecture. Beginning with the theoretical basics and an analysis of technological developments, technology life cycles, the development and content of a technology strategy as well as the relevance of technology portfolios are discussed. Methods and tools of technology foresight (among others scenario analysis, technology roadmapping, Delphi method) are presented and complemented by practical examples. Different forms of technology sourcing and exploitation are discussed. The lecture closes with the relevance of intellectual property rights and the significance of patent management and patent strategies for technology management.

By integrating the theoretical concepts with case studies and practitioner talks the lecture has a highly practical perspective.
