Course Contents:
Introduction : Stress intensity factor, strain energy release rate,
Griffith, Inglis, instability criteria

Fracture : crack initiating defects, fracture origin, fractography

Cracks : crack opening, crack bridging, R-curve, crack tip toughness
and crack shielding, sub-critical crack growth and fatigue

Toughening mechanisms : micromechanics of toughening by transformation,
by microcracks, by fibres, by whiskers, by particles and by ductile
toughening, laminates

High temperature behaviour : creep, thermal shock, mechanics of
interfaces

Hardness and wear : DIN standards and experimental techniques

Reliability : Weibull modulus and proof testing
