Course Contents:

  • Theory and practical implications of the concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
  • Hydrological Ecosystem Services: Definition, principles, assessment and valuation
  • Development of compensation schemes for Hydrological Ecosystem Services (Building on green infrastructure)
  • Solving problems of spatial fit and institutional interplay in IWRM by applying the concept of Hydrological Ecosystem Services
  • Water-Energy-Nexus (Addressing cross-sectoral linkages: water demand for energy and fuel production; energy demand for water extraction, conveyance, distribution, treatment, etc.)
  • Water and Urbanization (feedback loops of urbanization impacts and water resources as sources and sinks)
  • Water Resources Management in developing countries (esp. issues concerning environmental politics and environmental economics as major hurdles towards sustainable and participative management)

Expected results:

  • Improvement of knowledge and comprehensive understanding of the concept of IWRM and hydrological ecosystem services.
  • Elaboration of ecosystem-based solutions for the implementation of IWRM in practice.
  • Recognition of key elements and design principles of compensation schemes for Hydrological Ecosystem Services.
  • Knowledge transfer on intrinsic and cross-sectoral Water-Energy-linkages (Nexus) and feasible solutions.
  • Awareness of quantitative and qualitative water problems related to urbanization, esp. in developing countries
