Human Rights and environmental protection: theory and practice
Maria-Artemis Kolliniati, M.A., PhD cand.
The course examines the theoretical development and implementation of human rights. It begins with an introductory account of the general idea of human rights in contemporary political theory focusing on the work of Ronald Dworkin, Robert Nozick and Joseph Raz. The course then will apply these theories, studying the relationship between the environmental protection and selected rights of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) such as:
- Respect for family life (Art. 8 of the ECHR)
- The right to life (Art.2 of the ECHR)
- Protection of property (Art. 1 of Protocol No 1 of the ECHR)
Could someone claim that there is a violation of the above rights of the ECHR because of road traffic noise, industrial noise pollution, or water supply contamination? By the end of the course students will be familiar with the basic theories of human rights and their application on some ECHR rights which might be related (indirectly) to environmental issues.
