Course Contents:
The course covers the experimental aspects of discoveries related to the Standard Model of Particle Physics and to Nuclear Physics. The stage at the time of the discovery as well as the implications of the discoveries for the understanding of the structure of matter and of the fundamental interactions will be discussed. Current research related to the given topic will be emphasized.

Plan of the lectures:

   1. Prelude to the XX-th century: X-rays, the electron and radioactivity
   2. The nucleus and nuclear disintegration (+cosmic rays?)
   3. All in one year: the neutron, the positron and the deuterium
   4. Artificial radioactivity, nuclear fission, nuclear energy (and transuranic elements)
   5. The muon, the pion and the strange particles
   6. The neutrino and the parity violation
   7. Accelerators (linear, cyclotron) and detectors (cloud, bubble, wire chambers)
   8. Discovery of antimatter: from antiprotons to anti-He
   9. Discovery of superheavy elements (and more about nuclei)
  10. Deep-inelastic scattering and the quarks (and gluons) within the proton
  11. The charm and bottom quarks; CP violation
  12. Three lepton species; neutrino oscillations
  13. Weak interaction vector bosons (W+- and Z0)
  14. The top quark; further experimental basis of the standard model
  15. The Higgs boson
  16. The Quark-Gluon Plasma
  17. Wrap-up: questions, discussion of key points
