Official Course Description:
This course (taught in English) deals with historical political speeches in an interdisciplinary perspective: Examples of political speeches by Winston Churchill and other well-known British politicians will be analysed by combining linguistic tools and historical approaches, in order to gain a fuller understanding of the relevance and potency of political oratory. Students will learn to use freely available, simple-to-use linguistic analysis tools and their application in the analysis of historical text corpora. Since political speeches are a fundamental source category in the teaching of (modern) history in schools, we will also consider the applicability of the approaches from the seminar for didactic purposes.
Do not hesitate to join the course if you harbour doubts about the versatility of your English - the course is designed to offer you the opportunity to practice your language skills, so nobody expects you to present flawless language capabilities!!
