Course Contents:
Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft (1793), the so-called "Religionsschrift" by Immanuel Kant, is a key piece for Kant's thinking: On the one hand it is about philosophical theses on religion, on the other hand one also has a kind of short version of Kant's whole practical philosophy in front of one.

As an important and philosophically attractive full text, the religious scripture is read in the seminar and worked out step by step in dialogue. The focus of interest is on the one hand Kant's philosophy of religion and his criticism of the church, and on the other hand the question of the tension between religion and reason in general.

Not only finally, of course, is the question of the historical situation and the topicality of the problems of the text important: To what extent does Kant's philosophy belong to religion in a long past epoch? Where is it topical?

The basis of the course is continuous participation and the passing of a final written test. The seminar will be held in German language.

Further Grading Information:
Please obtain the text base BEFORE the first seminar session in an edition which contains the page numbers of the two editions from the "Academy" edition ("A ..."/"B ...") as accompanying information (this is the case, for example, in the Suhrkamp paperback edition "Werke Bd. BIII" [stw]). Without a paper version of the text containing this information, it is not possible to follow the seminar discussion. (Warning against editions from no-name Internet publishers!)
