Course Contents:
Ferroelectricity, defined by the presence of spontaneous polarization that can be reversed by the application of an external field, has been of great interest not only due to scientific curiosity but also due to its potential applicability such as non-volatile memory, electro-optic data storage, on/off-type switching devices, etc. Additionally due to its inherent piezoelectricity even in a polycrystalline state, it has further found a number of technologically important applications such as actuators, transducers, sensors, nano-positioners, ultrasonic imaging devices, etc. The goal of this course is to understand the ferroelectricity and related phenomena, hopefully from the fundamentals to applications. Thermodynamics, crystallography, and processing issues will also be covered to facilitate the understanding of the topic.
