Digital Teaching:
The seminar will take place digitally via Zoom. More detailed information and the exact structure and implementation of the seminar will be explained in the first Zoom session.

Course Contents:
In addition to the introductory philosophical and historical reading of texts, the connection between theory and material will be deepened in the seminar and exemplified by different discourses and a special teaching format. The seminar will therefore be of an experimental nature in addition to the classical reading courses. Students should not only choose and reflect on their own problems with the theory they have chosen, but also try out new research formats. Under the methodological focus of research-based learning, students in these seminars are to be provided with a sound scientific education in an examination of science and research, which should lead to independent research activities.

To this end, the programme will cooperate with a publishing house that will produce an open-access publication. This will be directly linked to our university teaching and will enable students to work on a concrete subject (problems, theories, complex of topics) to produce a publication which will be published online in open access and as a book, and which will specifically try to reach a wider readership. The close supervision of the students by the seminar leaders and the lecturers of the publishing house aims firstly to give the students early access to scientific work. Secondly, the aim is to practise and reflect on academic practice. The aim here is that students do not just passively receive answers, but actively ask and answer questions themselves.

Literature:
The research texts, which move between philosophy and history, are made available at Moodle.

Official Course Description:
Since ancient times, human has been described not only as an organism but always as a machine. This pattern of interpretation between life and technology, which is rich in conflict, has been radicalised since the 18th century with the scientificisation of human. Especially in the 20th century, human and machine are merging not only theoretically, but increasingly also practically. Human becomes clockwork, steam engine, computer, cyborg or posthuman. In analogy and difference to technology, man tries again and again to set up self-descriptions and anthropologies. The seminar will discuss and reflect on new approaches to this process of organically negotiating technology. How do man and machine connect and separate? Through which epistemological and concrete relations do "organism" and "technology" connect and establish themselves?
