Course Contents:
In the optional module Facade Technology, the functionality of the façade is explained, the state of the art is presented and the areas in which research potential exists are discussed.
The most important current topics are intelligent facades with a focus on thermal energy. In addition to a lecture series, there will be a construction workshop in this module. This workshop will focus on developing a dynamic facade instead of a conventional static facade. Thermal activation will be used to react to the fluctuating supply of renewable energies. The use of environmental energy should relieve the technical building equipment and finally save fossil energy sources.
During this workshop, the students will develop a façade mock-up which provides for thermal activation on the outside and inside of the façade in order to absorb thermal energy, store it temporarily and release it again at a suitable time. Due to the increasingly noticeable climate change and the energy-intensive air conditioning technology, such concepts are becoming increasingly important, especially for cooling in summer.

Due to the limitations of COVID-19 distribution, the theoretical teaching of the learning material will take place via a digital platform. Unfortunately it will not be possible to do the practical part in the workshop. This part will be replaced by an extension of the design sketch of an energetically active facade with a model in Rhino, Grasshopper and Honeybee.
