Course Contents:
The course deals with cutting-edge development topics in the field of multimedia communication systems. In addition to a general overview, an in-depth insight into a specific development area is provided. The topics are semester-specific and are determined by the specific research areas of the scientific staff at the department. The topics are intended to provide technical and basic scientific competencies in one or more of the following areas:

  • Network design and analysis
  • Performance evaluation of network applications
  • Discrete event-based simulation of network services
  • Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Disruption-Tolerant Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks
  • Infrastructure Networks for Mobile Communications, Access Networks
  • Context-aware communication and services
  • Peer-to-peer systems and architectures
  • Web service technologies and service-oriented architectures
  • AI-based Network Security & Routing

The respective topics will be presented in the kickoff event on the first date and then published in Moodle. The further dates will be coordinated individually with the supervisors and do not follow the scheme given in Tucan. The successful completion of the course includes the submission and the presentation of a poster of the own topic at a common obligatory presentation event, the submission of a written paper, as well as the oral presentation of the results in the context of an obligatory final colloquium with all participating students.

Each topic is covered by a selection of papers and articles. In addition we recommend reading of selected chapters from following books:

  • Andrew Tanenbaum: "Computer Networks". Prentice Hall PTR (ISBN 0130384887)
  • Raj Jain: "The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis: Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement, Simulation, and Modeling" (ISBN 0-471-50336-3)
  • Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph E. Johnson: "Design Patterns: Objects of Reusable Object Oriented Software" (ISBN 0-201-63361-2)
  • Kent Beck: "Extreme Programming Explained - Embrace Changes" (ISBN-13: 978-0321278654)

Preconditions:
Keen interest to explore challenging topics which are cutting edge in technology and research. Further we expect:

  • Solid experience in programming Java and/or C# (C/C++)
  • Solid knowledge in object oriented analysis and design
  • Solid knowledge in computer communication networks are recommended
  • Lectures in Communication Networks I (II, III, or IV) are an additional plus
