Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
Democracy and human rights in Turkey have long been, particularly after the Cold War era a prime determinant of the overall shape of the EU-Turkey relations. More than any other topic, they have acted as a litmus test for the relationship as a whole over the decades. Since the beginning of the relationship, the EU has been the major external driver of political reforms in Turkey. Particularly the post-2005 trajectory of democratic reforms in Turkey demonstrates that the EU still a fundamental anchor in the consolidation of Turkish democracy.

This course first outlines the history of Turkey-Europe relations in short then will focus issues such as evaluation of Turkish democracy, civil-military relations, fundamental freedoms, the judicial system, the Kurdish question, minority rights, domestic political and social polarization, freedom of expression, media and internet freedom and other issues which fall into scope of democracy and human rights. Correlations between Europeanisation and Democratization and de-Europeanisation, de-Democratization will also be discussed.

In this course we will find the answers the questions like, how have democracy and human rights affected EU- Turkey relations and why do democracy and human rights matter in EU-Turkey relations? Each class will begin with a lecture/presentation and end up with a brainstorming exercise.
