Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: (Course language is English) In this seminar we will deal with concepts of the state and its transformation for one, and an exploration of the state in the case of the United States on the other. While the US is commonly associated with having a comparatively limited state in multiple regards - e.g. a limited government with complex division of powers, a limited 'welfare state', among other things -, it turns out that the historical development of the state in the US reveals a number of ambivalences. This will become apparent and better comprehensible - or thus is the goal of our course - through an institutional-theoretical analytical approach to the development of the state since the founding of the US into the present. Accordingly, the seminar will focus on the US case, but will also offer considerable space for comparative as well as theoretical perspectives. The course of instruction is English, and students are encouraged to participate - no matter what level of English skills or confidence. Exams can be taken/written in either English or German.
