Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The seminar provides an overview of geopolitical debates and issues. In a first part, we will discuss theoretical and conceptual perspectives ranging from classical geopolitical approaches to more recent attempts to develop critical geopolitics. In a second step, we built on these concepts and make use of them analyzing specific security issues like the Crimea crisis, tensions in the South-China Sea, the role of the US and the geopolitical ambition of the EU. In the final sessions, the future of geopolitics and how it relates to e.g. renewable energy or climate politics and the concept of the Anthropocene will be discussed. The seminar will be conducted in cooperation with Prof. Matthias Hofferberth and a group of MA students of the Department of Political Science and Geography of the University of Texas at San Antonia. A first introductory meeting will take place 20.01.2021 at 15.00 o’clock via zoom to clarify organizational issues. The seminar itself will be conducted from 08.-12.03.2021 from 15.00-19.00 o’clock via zoom. For those who want to write a term paper an extra session will be held on 22.03.2022 again at the same time. Oral exams will take place on the 23.03.2021.
