"So wise so young, they say, do never live long".
- Shakespeare, Richard III (Act III, Scene I).

This lecture provides an overview of William Shakespeare’s dramatic work. We will discuss the four classical genres: romance, comedy, tragedy and historical play and their dramatic structures. Moreover, we’ll learn about Shakespearean language, characters, motifs, performance and history. The lecture starts with the romantic comedy Twelfth Night, which is followed by a discussion about The Winter's Tale.  Before Christmas King Lear (tragedy) will be approached and to finish up the lecture we will be talking about Richard III, one of the most famous historical plays by Shakespeare.

There also will be several treats during and at the end of the semester: First the whole course will be going to see Shakespeare’s Macbeth in English language at the Staatstheater Darmstadt on February 4th. Second there will be a trip to London. On the bases of what we will have learned about Shakespeare by then, we will be exploring Stratford- upon- Avon and London. Also we will visit the Globe Theatre to see a Shakespearean play. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to enjoy several other cultural facilities (British Library, Tate Britain etc.). If you wish to participate in this trip we need you to send an application to both of the addresses named below by October 17th. Any application arriving after that will not be considered. The trip will be partially funded by the university. There are 15 spaces available.

Send application to helff@linglit.tu-darmstadt.de  and  tutorium.gontscharow@gmx.de.
