Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This seminar is concerned with methods of the corpus-based analysis of language. We are going to discuss types of research questions and applications that are suitably pursued by means of corpus and computational linguistic methods and techniques. Examples are lexicological questions such as research on terminology as well as collocations and other types of multi-word lexical units, the corpus-based description of special-purpose grammars, e.g. extraction of register-specific subcategorization patterns, and the role of corpora in statistical natural language processing. In this seminar, you are going to learn how to compile corpora for particular research questions, how to annotate a corpus with relevant categories and at different levels of linguistic organization (syntactic, semantic, pragmatic etc.), how to maintain a corpus and how to query the corpus and interpret the resulting data. The seminar also investigates the structure and composition of a variety of standard corpora such as the Brown and LOB corpus, the British National Corpus and corpora of other languages. Note: The seminar is accompanied by a practical introduction to corpus resources and tools (see Übung Corpus Linguistics) which is obligatory in some courses of study.
