Literatur: Please obtain a copy of the following texts before the semester starts: William Shakespeare, Othello. (Please buy an annotated edition of the play, e.g. the Arden Edition) Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights (I recommend the Penguin Classics edition) Andrea Arnold, Wuthering Heights, 2011 (e.g. on DVD). Other texts will be available as a PDF class pack.
Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Should Othello be played exclusively by black actors? Is it acceptable for white actors – who have traditionally excelled in the role of Shakespeare’s most famous African character – to blacken their faces? How clearly is Othello’s ethnic identity defined in the play? Can visual media be ambiguous about ethnic identity? The example of Othello is representative of a recent trend in re-thinking and re-casting ethnic difference. Andrea Arnold’s filming of Wuthering Heights (2011) is another case in point, and the debates about ‘colour-blind’ or ‘non-traditional casting’ in TV, theatre and film are another. We will discuss Shakespeare’s Othello and its film adaptations, and we will look at the novel and the film versions of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights in order to approach the role of ethnic stereotypes in a literary and a visual text in their respective historical contexts. We will discuss recent theoretical positions on race and ethnicity as cultural constructions in order to get a firm grasp on the issue. We will apply our findings to other case studies from recent popular culture (e.g. casting Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in The Avengers, 2012, or Idris Elba as a Norse god in Thor, 2010). You are welcome to suggest more examples!
