Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Since the 19th century, crime fiction has been one of the most successful literary genres. The seminar will discuss some of the classical texts of the genre, beginning with E.A. Poe’s and Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories, and moving on to the 20th century with the hardboiled school (Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler), an early serial killer narrative (Thompson) and a limit case of genre fiction, Patricia Highsmith. We will discuss the texts from the point of view of genre theory, and we will raise the question if crime fiction is a particularly modern genre. Apart from reading the set texts, students will have to present one crime novel of their own choice during the semester. Other course materials – including E.A. Poe, The Purloined Letter and The Mystery of Marie Rôget - will be available as a PDF class pack.
