Literatur: Please obtain the following texts before the semester starts: George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings Other materials will be available as a PDF class pack.
Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Lovingly invented, highly detailed, and immensely comprehensive fictional universes have become popular in the 2000s: The Matrix trilogy, Harry Potter, Lost and Game of Thrones are recent examples while the renewed interest in the worlds of Lord of the Rings and the prequels to the 1970s Star Wars trilogy are based on slightly earlier texts. In these fictional worlds, the distinction between a core narrative and various, multi-medial platforms becomes blurred: merchandizing articles and versions of narratives in other media (e.g. computer games), off-shoot shows, bonus materials, exclusively released episodes, internet platforms and discussion groups as well as fan fiction sites weave an increasingly complex web of character relations and storylines. Can these narrative webs still be ‘read’ and ‘viewed’ in the traditional sense or do they invite other forms of audience involvement? How are they constructed in order to allow for franchising? To what extent is audience involvement driven by commercial interests, and to what extent do producers and writers explore new narrative forms? We will begin by discussing theoretical approaches to media narratives, convergence culture and franchising. Our first example will be Game of Thrones. The seminar will then move into a project-oriented phase, giving students an opportunity to analyze and present examples of their own.
