Lehrinhalte: The history of the English language can be divided into various stages. Middle English was spoken approximately between the twelfth and the fifteenth century. It was the language of the most well-known English poet before Shakespeare, namely Geoffrey Chaucer. However, Middle English was by no means a uniform standard and there were differences on both diachronic and dialectal grounds. This seminar looks at various linguistic categories of this language stage, in particular orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. We will also translate excerpts from some important Middle English texts, for example, from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
