Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: “Love, Sex and the Construction of Gender in Contemporary Literature”: Gender as a social construct has become very important when dealing with literary theory. It is important to notice that gender is instable and fluent, heavily depending on one's own idea of "men" and "woman", "male" and "female". This proseminar will offer an introduction to gender by focusing on theories as well as looking at how the subject is presented and perceived in literature and film. Our aim will be to understand how masculinity and femininity are shaped and developed, and how they come together in different social contexts, how they are viewed within different cultures and how their importance in literary theory varies over time. Therefore, we will look at socio-economic factors, historical contexts and the backgrounds of authors and directors, showing how personal experience and ideas as well as public life can create different versions of "gender". We will focus on subjects like heterosexuality vs. homosexuality, race, class and youth. The primary sources will cover genres like drama, sci-fi, diaspora and comedy. Please make sure that you get hold of all required primary literature within time. A class pack/reader will be available by the beginning of the semester.
