Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
„It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.“
The first sentence of “Pride and Prejudice”, one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels, points directly towards the main topic of most of Austen novels. The problems of matchmaking, love marriage and marriage of convenience are central motifs in Austen’s oeuvre. But also imperialism, family and society and the role of men and women at the turn of the 19th century have to be considered. In this seminar we will look at three novels and some of their adaptations on film and other media to put together a panoramic view of the wondrous and constricted world of Jane Austen.
