Lehrinhalte: Einführung in die linguistische Organisation der englischen Sprache auf den Ebenen der Phonetik und Phonologie, Morphologie, Syntax und Semantik. Studierende lernen, natürliche Sprache als komplexes Kommunikationsinstrument auf verschiedenen Ebenen zu analysieren.

Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The aim of this seminar is to learn a method for the grammatical analysis of texts which is based on Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG, Halliday ³2004). You will be introduced to SFG and study its basic categories: Mood & Modality, Theme-Rheme structure and Transitivity. A grammatical analysis of texts can help us to identify linguistic patterns that serve a range of purposes in our lives. We will study different types of spoken and written discourse to find out how these grammatical patterns can be used to manifest class affiliation and exert power where you least expect it. Requirements: • Active participation in all class work, working through texts / exercises / discussions. You are expected to attend class on a regular basis. • Homework assignments (reading 20-40 pages before each session; exercises). • A written exam in the last session on 30 June 2012.
