Lehrinhalte: Das Seminar vermittelt Kenntnisse in der Gattungstheorie und führt an ausgewählten Beispieltexten in die vertiefende Beschreibung und Analyse einer ausgewählten Gattung (Lyrik, Drama, erzählende Prosa) ein. Studierende erhalten einen Einblick in die verschiedenen literarischen Genres und lernen diese anhand eigener Analysen und Interpretationsübungen kennen.
Literatur: Lehrmaterialen und Übungen werden über das WWW zur Verfügung gestellt unter http://www.linglit.tu-darmstadt.de. Weitere, im Verlaufe des Kurses behandelte Literatur ist über die Bibliotheken der TU Darmstadt zu beziehen.

Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Since its beginnings in the early 19th century crime and detective fiction have relied on urban settings such as Paris and London. It is the main goal of this seminar to explore how urbanity continues to be one of the central locations of the genre. To analyze the historical development of crime fiction`s urban settings we will start with E.A. Poe`s tales from the 1830s. Tracing a process of continuous generic differentiation we will have to ask the following questions: what is the relation between crime and urbanity? Which are the recurring topoi and tropes characterizing the genre`s representations of urbanity? How do we relate places of production and reception to the novels` setting? Can we draw something like a map of the important urban settings of crime fiction? How do we explain the realistic appeal of these novels and their representations of spatiality? How is the subgenre of urban crime fiction appropriated in postcolonial contexts? What do contemporary urban crime novels contribute to city marketing campaigns? What happens to urban settings in serialised novelistic formats? To discuss these questions we will study texts by Charles Dickens, A.C. Doyle, R. Chandler, C. Himes, S. Paretsky, W. McIlvanney, I. Rankin, Richard Kunzmann and Heinrich Steinfest – who just published the first crime novel dealing with "Stuttgart 21". Texts: The final list of crime novels will be posted on my office door at the beginning of April. A reader containing secondary material will be available at Kopiethek, Magdalenenstraße. As introductory reading I recommend the collection of essays edited by Jochen Vogt: Der Kriminalroman. Poetik, Geschichte, Theorie (Semesterapparat).Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation and a final paper.
