Lehrinhalte: Ziel des Seminars ist die Vermittlung und Anwendung von Methoden der lexiko-grammatischen Analyse, die es ermöglichen, für bestimmte Register (funktionale Sprachvarianten) typische linguistische Muster zu erkennen. Die vorgestellten Methoden umfassen zum Beispiel die Registeranalyseverfahren nach Biber und sollen in eigenständigen Analysen auf exemplarische Texte angewandt werden.
Literatur: Lehrmaterialen und Übungen werden über das WWW zur Verfügung gestellt unter http://www.linglit.tu-darmstadt.de. Weitere, im Verlaufe des Kurses behandelte Literatur ist über die Bibliotheken der TU Darmstadt zu beziehen. Spezifische Referenzen sind: Biber 1988 and 1995, Halliday 1985.

Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This seminar is concered with theories of genre and register as well as the methodology underlying the study of natural language discourse. Areas of study include: grammatical and discourse structures and the interaction of grammar and discourse.The course is going to concern itself with variation across spoken and written English genres and registers such as face-to-face conversation, telephone chats, newspaper articles, or academic book reviews.We will look at formal and functional differences and similarities between different registers and genres. For example, we are going to look at differences between spoken vs. written language, casual conversation in the family vs. formal speeches in the House of Parliament, popular science articles vs. scientific book chapters.In the course of the semester, we are going to accompany our theoretical discussions by hands-on analyses of texts from a diverse set of genres and registers such as news papers columns, research articles, book chapters and novels from different domains and from different time periods thus also including a historical perspective in our study of the development of registers and genres. In the course of these analyses you are also going to become familiar with methods of working with electronic text corpora and compuational tools for text analysis.
