Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This subject introduces a range of theoretic concepts and empirical cases which will enable students to understand the relationship between the city and socio-political conflict. The focus is on the ways in which buildings and public spaces mediate various phenomena and processes, including: nationalism, cosmopolitanism, political power, conflict, war, violence, terrorism, resistance, memory, trauma, migration, human rights, democracy, and social justice. Upon the completion of this subject, students will attain critical skills and methodologies for the analysis of the social and political agency of architecture and urban space. They will gain an intellectual base for understanding the capacity of spatial thinking to tackle contemporary political challenges and induce positive societal change. This seminar-based subject will run through weekly student presentations and discussions based on readings. The assessment will take place through an essay submitted at the end of the semester.
