13-B2-J004-se Using GIS for Urban Analysis

Course offering details

Instructors: Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Linke; M.Sc. Audrey Bourgoin; M.Sc. Tran Minh Tri Hua; M.Sc. Miriam Mayer; Prof. Dr.-Ing. Erich Wieser

Event type: Seminar

Org-unit: Dept. 13 - Civil and Environmental Engineering

Displayed in timetable as: GIS for Urban Ana.

Subject:

Crediting for:

Hours per week: 2

Language of instruction: Englisch

Min. | Max. participants: - | -

Digital Teaching:
The exercise will probably be offered using the conference tool Zoom at the times given in TUCaN. Students will receive a weekly link and a password for the online meeting via the conference service Zoom (technical requirements: Internet access, microphone and optionally camera). The link can be found in the section "Access Online Exercise/ Zugang Online-Übung" in Moodle.

As every year, the exercise is carried out independently by students. Supervisors and tutors are however available via zoom to support students if they have problems carrying out the exercise. The students have to download the exercise materials from Moodle BEFORE the exercise.

Communication of all information and changes as well as materials for the exercise takes place via the moodle course, which will be activated shortly before the start of the lecture and to which all participants are automatically added. In this way, students can communicate directly with each other and with the lecturers about content-specific or organizational aspects. For further questions, online consultation hours can be arranged with the teachers.

Course Contents:
!! Note: This seminar (in English and in the winter semester) replaces the exercise Geoinformationssysteme 1, which will not take place anymore !!

Desktop GIS application: Introduction to ArcGIS

Exercise 1: Introduction to vector data and coordinate systems
Data viewing and folder structure, Inserting vector data, Defining and changing coordinate systems.

Exercise 2: Editing vector data
Handle and editing of attributes, object classes, types, domains.

Exercise 3: Raster data
Import different raster data into ArcGIS, transform them into an existing coordinate system. Perform a georeferencing for a raster image without spatial reference. The aim of the exercise is to create a digital terrain model (DTM) with contour lines.

Exercise 4: Attribute-based analysis
Creation of new object-classes based on attributes. Use of Analysis-Tools. Export as table and editing of attributes.

Exercise 5: Spatial analysis
Use of various tools of the ArcToolbox to carry out spatial analyses. Display buildings located within a selected area. Create buffers around give locations and analysis of the buildings and plots within. Intersect, merge, dissolve areas. Check the topology.

Exercise 6: Creating Diagrams, Annotations, Model Builder
Create different types of diagrams to display for each district different information from multiple features in one map.
Display of captions and annotations.
Introduction to Model Builder, which was designed in ArcGIS to link individual process steps, to save them in a separate toolbox and execute them automatically.

Exercise 7: Visualization
Use of the "Layout" Toolbar to set up the page and printer settings, the scale, the dimensions of the data frame... Add a title, a north arrow, a scale bar, a grid, a legend. Convert the legend to a graphic to modify its information.

+ Homework exercise at the end of the Semester

Preconditions:
none

Expected Number of Participants:
40-60

Further Grading Information:
After students have attended the course, they

  • master basic functions of GIS,
  • may support projects of urban development with GIS techniques from the beginning of data acquisition, processing, analysing and visualization
  • have the ability to weigh up different solutions, to explain them objectively and understandably, to make and justify decisions,
  • can also use GIS for more advanced tasks in urban development and planning such as spatial analysis, catchment area analysis, network analysis, overlaying, etc
