Digital Teaching:
The course will be held in WiSe 2021 as a hybrid teaching format which means as a combination of presence and online teaching. with the first scheduled lecture on Friday 22 October at 10:00 h.

It is the intention to keep as much as possible the lecture character of the course for every participant. Therefore, our lecture will again take place in the lecture hall, as we were used to before Corona times. We would emphasise that the participation at the lecture would be as present as possible. If necessary, participants can book a guaranteed seat in the lecture hall via the online platform Moodle every week.

Correspondingly, we offer a live online lecture via ZOOM for anyone who is not present at the scheduled times of the lecture. All subscribed students will get a Moodle system message in due time, indicating the access data for the online lecture. During the lecture, you will have means ande opportunities to interact with the lecturer. Questions and comments can be injected through an online chat. They will be processed and forwarded to the lecturer by a dedicated lecture support staff.

I am looking forward to finally meeting you again "live“!!!

Course Contents:
The lecture shall present the basics to understand, design and operate space systems, in particular: Historical development of spaceflight, utilisation of space, space environment, Ziolkowsky equation, foundations of orbit mechanics and maneuvers*, overview on subsystems for space systems: energy provision, attitude and orbit control, thermal control, data handling and communication.
*: complementary to „Space Flight Mechanics” (module no. 16-25-5130)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • explain the historical development of space flight with the relevant technological and societal connections, together with the respective applications and utilisation scenarios,
  • describe, characterise and estimate the relevant environmental factors for space systems (e.g. thermal environment, residual atmosphere, particle radiation etc.),
  • describe basic orbit manoeuvres,
  • describe and analyse typical subsystems in their functionality and design.
