Course Contents:
Latin II is the second part of the two-semester Latin course, which is designed to impart knowledge of classical Latin that is an indispensable prerequisite for meaningful academic work with Latin sources of all kinds. The aim of the course is to build on the knowledge already acquired in Latin I and to impart fundamental knowledge of form theory and syntax. The teaching material used contains mainly adapted texts by Roman authors. In addition to the acquisition of linguistic knowledge, some aspects of Roman culture and literature will also be examined.

Latin II includes the following topics: Comparative and superlative, other tenses (imperfect, perfect, past perfect, future tense), participium coniunctum, ablative absolutus, subjunctive (present, imperfect, past perfect, perfect), gerund, gerundive, functions of the subjunctive in the main clause.

From lesson 20 of the textbook used, the learning of vocabulary is dispensed with, as from this point on only the remaining grammatical subject matter is discussed and isolated Latin textbook texts are dealt with.
In Latin, original texts are also used in parts. They are dedicated to interpretation, as connotations (e.g. How does Caesar portray his political opponent, how himself?) can only be worked out by looking closely at the original Latin.

Literature:
Kuhlmann: Unikurs Latein, Buchner-Verlag. ISBN 978-3-7661-7595-3

Preconditions:
In order to participate in this course, students must have taken and passed Latin I with a grade.
Students who did not write the Latin I final exam or who did not take Latin I but have some previous knowledge of Latin must write and pass a compulsory test in the first class of the semester.

Further Grading Information:
Requirement for course completion: two written exams

A dictionary must not be used during the written examinations, because a clear understanding of the text can be achieved by mastering the vocabulary. Of course, the written exam only contains vocabulary that was to be learned in the vocabulary of the textbook.
