Official Course Description:
The radical departure from multilateralism under Trump, together with the perception of US decline in world politics, has reinvigorated debates in IR on the status of the current global order. In this class, we want to explore the language of order(s) and ordering more broadly and expand our understandings of what defines current world politics. The class will be organized as a blocked seminar and we will hold classes each day in the morning, providing an interactive input on the daily theme (history of ordering; anarchy, power and balances; rules, institutions and governance; hierarchy, hegemony and empire; future of global order) to then allow the students to discuss and apply learning content in groups. Organized around policy areas, each group will explore different theoretical motifs and empirical developments in their area. By doing so, we not only capture important debates and address pressing real-world issue. At the same time, the class will provide an overview of broader IR theory and enables the students to apply these in independent research.

The seminar will be conducted in cooperation with Prof. Matthias Hofferberth and a group of MA students of the Department of Political Science and Geography of the University of Texas at San Antonio. It is planned that the seminar will take place in Texas from March 14-18 and is thus restricted to 15 MA students (Governance and ISFK) from TU Darmstadt who will (most likely) receive a grant to cover costs for the flight. All other costs will have to be covered by the students. At this point in time (August 2021) no official decision has been taken whether international seminars of this kind can take place due to the COVID pandemic. We will notify all students interested in the seminar in October. Thus if you are interested, please subscribe in moodle and all further information will be made available there. In case traveling is not possible, the seminar will take place via zoom in the same week.
